My very first firing is now complete and an all around success! The past two weeks Jeremiah has been working on getting the correct power needed to fire the kiln. With a brand new wire, breaker and outlet, my little Skutt 1027 was screaming to be used to its fullest potential. I loaded it back up Thursday night and fired all day yesterday- all the way to cone 10- or 2350 degrees- the highest an electric kiln will go and then shut it off to cool for 14 hours. Early this morning, not unlike Christmas, I snuck down to the basement with a flashlight and high hopes to crack the lid open to see what I could see. (You cannot open a kiln fully after a firing, you must leave it cracked for a bit to cool down more). The kiln had worked. My used craigslist aquired kiln had done the job and I could see a beautiful teal bowl peaking out the top at me. After distracting myself a little longer I finally opened it up and my heart soared! The kiln worked, I didn't burn the house down or blow up any pots. None of my pots even dripped on the shelves.
Yay! This a day of celebration.

hooray! i like the green one with the twisted handles.
ReplyDeleteI love that same bowl too! Nice way to wake up...
ReplyDeleteLooks like everything turned out beautifully. I'm glad that you were able to get the wiring done and get it fired. Isn't it fun waiting for the kiln to cool enough to open it? It's so much different when it's all yours rather than a class effort. You have so much riding on it...
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I'm really impressed :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you didn't cause any housefires. Come to Augusta and sell your work to the lady on Broad Street
ReplyDeleteYay, I'm so glad it works, I think I like the speckled plate the best. Are you going to try your cone 6 glazes next?
ReplyDeleteNice! I am working on my own craigslist kiln aquisition. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Cone 10! Wow! I have two kilns (a jewelry and a bigger sized kiln) that can do that but I've never been brave enough to venture past Cone 6.
